The outreach program is vibrant. Museum staff creatively collaborate and foster local and regional community connections. The VMHA engages in Valdez annual events including the tree lighting ceremony, 4th of July Festival and Valdez Gold Rush Days. On occasion, it creates traveling exhibits replete with educational resources designed to engage exhibit-goers at host sites located elsewhere in Alaska, Hawaii and the Lower 48.
The Museum serves rural communities located in Prince William Sound and the Copper River Basin. Historically, the Museum educator has traveled to Tatitlek for “Peksulineq: Cultural Heritage Week,” where students from Cordova, Valdez, Chenega Bay, Whittier, Nanwalek, Port Graham, Anchorage and Tatitlek participated in classes that centered around traditional lifestyle and arts, subsistence and Native language. Rural students who visit the Museum hail from as far away as McCarthy, Kenny Lake, Glennallen and Tatitlek.
