Valdez, Alaska, May 15, 2019 – Visiting hours have expanded at both locations. The main Museum on Egan Drive and the Valdez Museum on Hazelet, also known as the Remembering Old Valdez Exhibit (ROVE), are now open daily from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
This will be an exciting summer with the return of cruise ships to Port Valdez! The first Holland America ship made a full-day port stop on May 13th. Visitors flocked to both Valdez Museum locations as Patricia Relay, Executive Director, told her staff:
“I want to thank you for all your hard work yesterday as we welcomed the first cruise ship of the season. It was so nice to see the galleries full of visitors from around the world. We welcomed 277 visitors.”
This summer the Museum is pairing with Premier Alaska Tours and Viking Cruise Lines to coordinate land-based excursions. For each of their ten scheduled port stops the Museum will offer Coach Tour Guides for City tours, Survivor Talks at the ROVE and presentations on the history and current status of the Trans Alaska Pipeline.
The summer art exhibit, On Beyond Ziegler: Art & Heritage in Valdez, is now on display through September 8, 2019 at the main museum. It focuses on Valdez regional artists from the community’s formative years through the 1990s. There are works from well-known artists such as Sydney Laurence and Eustace Ziegler plus lesser-known artists like Joy Peterson Snodgrass and Gail Niebrugge. The exhibit also looks at inspirations behind the artwork and gives biographical details of the artists’ lives in Valdez.
The Valdez Museum is again part of the Blue Star Museums program which offers free admission for all active-duty military personnel and their families during the summer months. This 10th year of the program starts on Saturday, May 18, 2019, Armed Forces Day, and ends on Monday, September 2, 2019, Labor Day.
A summer visit to the Valdez Museum is an opportunity to learn about our community’s past through exhibits that tell stories of early exploration, native culture, Gold Rush, Alaska Bush pilots, the 1964 Earthquake and town relocation, the pipeline and the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill.
