If you have a few hours to visit, we recommend beginning with The Old Town Valdez Museum, located near the ferry dock at 436 S. Hazelet. Here, you’ll see our award winning documentary, Between the Glacier and the Sea and and a 1:20 scale model of the Old Town Valdez as it appeared just before the massive 1964 Earthquake. Accompanying the model are exhibits about the 1964 Earthquake, current seismic activity in our area, tsunami interactive, dog sleds, and every-day implements from the 50′s and 60′s.

The Valdez Museum on Egan Drive is located in the heart of downtown Valdez at 217 Egan Drive. It displays the rich history of Valdez, the Copper River Basin and Prince William Sound, Alaska through exhibits about our community’s past that tell the stories of Alaska Natives, 1898 Gold Rush and founding of Valdez, Alaska Bush Pilots, the Richardson Highway, Fort Liscum, the 1964 Earthquake, construction of the Trans Alaska Pipeline, and the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill. This summer’s visiting exhibition is Alaska Photographic’s annual, “Rarefied Light.”

Valdez Museum Members and North American Reciprocal Museum (NARM) Members receive free admission. Residents may register for a free or supporting membership.

The Valdez Museum & Historical Archive is much more than a place to store historical relics, artifacts and art. It is a place where we encourage all to come to learn, engage, and explore the material evidence of our world, and make it accessible to the public through programs of interpretation, education and exhibition.
