To say that the Valdez Museum collection is large is an understatement: with an estimated 75,000 individual objects in its care, management of the collection is a huge responsibility. Museums both large and small are tasked with tracking their collections, using the objects to tell the best stories, and preserving unique treasures. Treasure Trove offers museum visitors a rare behind-the-scenes look at museum operations, showing what happens to their historic objects after they are donated.

Treasure Trove uses as its framework the Valdez Museum’s ongoing collection management project begun in 2007. Since then, museum staff have been systematically going through the collection item by item, thoroughly documenting each object. The results of the project have been a more thorough understanding of the collection, including the discovery of the fascinating stories behind some of these historical objects. Visitors will also learn about the care that goes into collections to preserve them for future generations, and how to best care for their own historic treasures.

Treasure Trove runs May 12 – Sept 10 at the Valdez Museum. A free opening reception with refreshments will be held at the museum May 12, from 6 to 8 PM. For more information, call 835-2764 or email info@valdezmuseum.org.
