Valdez United Way Supports Museum Programs

Valdez, Alaska, June 28, 2019– The Education & Public Programs department of the Valdez Museum & Historical Archive (VMHA) has an ongoing commitment to serve the Valdez community by offering enhanced programs at the Museum. Mid-way through 2019 it’s time to look back at what has been accomplished so far. But first, a big thank you to the Valdez United Way for awarding the VMHA a $5,000 grant in March, 2019 that enables us to do these varied activities. Funds go toward supplies, equipment and travel for speakers.

One recent example is the Tuesday Nite History Talk held on June 25, 2019 by presenter Katherine Ringsmuth, PhD, Director of the NN Cannery History Project. Her work calls attention to Alaska’s seafood cannery workers, and tells the human story of their contributions not only to this vital Alaska industry but also to the social and cultural fabric of the state.

Programs supported by the Valdez United Way include these ongoing programs:

  • Partnerships with public and private school groups for teaching in the classroom and at the Museum.
  • Photo Walk and Image Share with Gary Minish, renowned Valdez nature photographer.
  • Tuesday Nite History Talk held the 4th Tuesday of the month at 5:30 pm. Each month different presenters cover new and interesting topics.
  • Old Town Walking Tour led by Museum Educator, Faith Revell.

Each year the Valdez United Way Board of Directors faces challenging decisions when it reviews funding requests at its Annual Meeting. We are grateful that the VHMA is among the other worthy community agencies and organizations to receive a 2019 grant award.

As the year progresses, this funding will help us continue to provide the communities of Valdez, Copper River Basin and Prince William Sound with engaging education and outreach programs that strengthen family connections and benefit these communities at large.
