Valdez Museum Reopened to Visitors on July 1st!

Valdez, Alaska, July 1, 2020 – The Valdez Museum & Historical Archive on Egan Drive in downtown Valdez reopened on July 1st, under new health guidelines that ensure a safe environment for visitors, volunteers and staff. The Museum’s doors have been closed to the public since mid-March due to health concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic. But despite the closure, museum staff have been busy creating online content that informs, stimulates and entertains viewers. In addition, the VMHA board and staff have been actively seeking grant funding to make up for revenue shortfalls from the extended closure.

With the July 1st reopening visitors are experiencing the “new normal” necessary to ensure that our visitors have a safe and comfortable environment in which to enjoy their time at the Museum. We are following state and federal health guidelines outlined in a VMHA Board approved COVID-19 Mitigation Plan based upon science and directives from public health officials, medical experts plus Federal, State and Local governments. Some highlights include:

  • Plexiglas barrier at the front reception desk
  • Mandatory use of face masks or face coverings
  • Sign in log for contact tracing
  • Limited capacity to 20 visitors in the Museum at one time
  • Limited occupancy in the Museum Store
  • Sanitation Stations throughout the Museum
  • Strict adherence to 6-foot social distancing
  • Marked traffic flow pattern through the Museum.

The Valdez Museum on Egan is open:

Tuesday – Sunday, 12 Noon to 4 pm. Closed on Monday.

The Valdez Museum on Hazelet, which houses the Remembering Old Valdez Exhibit (ROVE), is closed for the summer. Researchers can visit the Archive by appointment only.

Your safety is our priority, and we look forward to seeing you at the Museum soon!
