Thank You Museum Supporters!

Valdez, Alaska, January 24, 2019 – More than a dozen Valdez Museum advocates attended the Valdez City Council meeting on January 15, 2019 in support of a new building for the Museum. At the meeting council members discussed a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Valdez Museum and Historical Archive (VMHA) and the City of Valdez to jointly plan for and construct a new museum facility. City council members spoke in favor of a proposed 50% funding match between the City and the VMHA. A strong show of public support at the meeting plus many favorable comments sent to City Clerk Sherri Pierce beforehand were appreciated.

The VMHA Board of Directors and Staff have been working toward the goal of having all museum collections and exhibits under one roof. A multi-year Capital Construction Project began in 2015 when the Building Committee started meeting regularly, which led to developing a Master Interpretive Plan that was finalized in October, 2016. The project was put on hold, but positive momentum from the City Council on January 15 is moving it forward. Council members will again discuss the draft MOU on February 19, 2019.

A special meeting of the VMHA Board of Directors is scheduled for Wednesday, February 6, 2019 from 12 to 1 pm at the Valdez Museum on Egan Drive. The purpose is to prepare for the Valdez City Council meeting on February 19 and get a better understanding of what the MOU contains. As with all museum board meetings, the special meeting on February 6 is open to the public.
