Summer Art Exhibit Highlights the Legacy of Local Artists

Valdez, Alaska, May 14, 2019 – The Valdez Museum & Historical Archive is pleased to announce its summer exhibition, On Beyond Ziegler: Art & Heritage in Valdez. The community of Valdez has a proud artistic legacy through well-known artists such as Sydney Laurence, Eustace Ziegler, Theodore Lambert and others. Since its inception the VMHA has displayed the work of local artists to support its mission as well as to promote local and regional arts. But what of the intervening years?

This exhibit features artwork by Valdez regional artists from the community’s formative years through the 1990s. The Museum has a large collection of work from this period. But Andrew Goldstein, Curator of Collections & Exhibitions, reached out to local art collectors willing to share their prized pieces of art. Thanks to Rich Dunkin, Tom McAlister, Gloria McAlister, Mary Jo Evans and Shana Anderson for contributions that add depth and diversity to the exhibit. Also included are works by lesser-known artists such as Joy Peterson Snodgrass, Gail Niebrugge and many others. In addition, this multimedia exhibit looks at the inspirations behind the artwork and gives biographical details of the artists’ lives in Valdez.

On Beyond Ziegler: Art & Heritage in Valdez is on display at the Valdez Museum on Egan Drive now through September 8, 2019.
