History, Art and Architecture Converge

Valdez, Alaska, October 22, 2020:The Valdez Museum’s Egan Commons was a hub of activity on October 20 – 21, 2020. That’s when the design team of Wolf Architecture and Hennebery Eddy Architects came to town for an official kick-off the New Museum Project, a partnership between the City of Valdez and Valdez Museum & Historical Archive (VMHA). The two-day event not only included meetings with the Museum Building Committee, but engagement opportunities with the community. Navigating the “New Normal”, caused by the COVID 19 pandemic, did not dissuade our effort.

By all accounts the public Open House on October 20th was considered a success, and it served as a measure of community sentiment toward the prospect of a new museum building. While virtual attendance was offered, nearly all of the 31 attendees came in person to meet members of the talented design team representing both architectural firms. The event gave visitors a chance to view site plans for the project plus slides of previous design work by the architects; have one on one interactions; ask questions and offer input on the conceptual design of the new facility to be built at the present site of the Valdez Museum in the heart of downtown Valdez.

The VMHA Board and Staff offer a big Thank You to all who participated in the public open house and joined us in shaping the cultural future of your community. The official launch of this long-standing project marks a giant step forward for our dream of having a new consolidated 20,000 square foot Museum & Historical Archive. This is just the beginning. Please consider getting involved, and we look forward to hearing from you.
