Arrived with wife in Valdez on steamer “Morgan City” on May 7, 1898; met by Dempsey; told name of town was “Copper City;” spent first night with Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Roberts; built first permanent building in town; brewed and sold a beer called Malt Blossum made of malt hops, alcohol, capsicum, and chewing tobacco.
