Arrived in Port Townsend from Copper River area after vain search for gold reporting the discovery of native float copper; party of 15 will remain there over winter to search for the main deposit; Nicholai Knast, talking chief of the Copper River Indians, claims to know the location but refuses money to show prospectors the site “as he fears that whites will limit the supply depriving many Indians of a livelihood.” Copper Deposits are Found in Boston Evening Transcript, 10/28/98;
