Chinamen

1898-1899

Passengers on steamer Valencia, departing Seattle 4/7/98, Seattle P-I 4/8/98 & Seattle Times, 4/8/98; (same as Abercrombie); “Sixty Chinamen fresh from the opium dens of San Francisco’s Chinatown, were mixed in with gold seekers from every state in the Union. The Chinamen were not going after gold, however. They will be landed at Orca, where the whaling company has a large cannery, in which the Chinamen are practically invaluable during the fishing season. They are quartered in the extreme forward portion of the steerage and spend most of their time smoking ‘hop’ to their heart’s content.” Seattle P-I, 4/8/98).
