Gold Rush Days at the Valdez Museum!

Valdez, Alaska, July 26, 2018 –According to its website, The Valdez Gold Rush Days are an annual celebration honoring the past, present and future of Valdez.”  The Valdez Museum, which shares similar goals, is joining the celebration by offering special activities during the 5-day event which takes place August 1-August 5, 2018.

Historic Homes and Businesses Tour in the Historic Hoosegow on Wednesday, August 1 from 1:30-3:00pm. You don’t have to get arrested to enjoy a ride on the Hoosegow, a fancy name for a traveling jail. Museum Educator Faith Revel will be the guide for this ride around town to view those structures that were relocated to new Valdez from the original town site after the 1964 Earthquake. The tour is free and starts at the Whitney Museum on the Prince William Sound College campus. The Historic Homes and Businesses Walking Tour covers the same route only without the Hoosegow ride on Saturday, August 4 from 3-4:30pm starting at the Valdez Museum on Egan Drive. Both tours are free and open to the public.

Gold Rush Days Guided Tours of Old Town on Thursday, August 2 from 11:30am-12:30pm and Friday, August 3 from 12:00pm-1:00pm. They will be led by longtime Valdez resident Beverly Colapietro. Visitors can see where buildings stood, who owned them and what they were used for, as well as learn about the lifestyle and character of pre-earthquake Valdez. Both tours are free and start at the intersection of Alaska Ave and the Richardson Highway.

FREE ADMISSION Saturday, August 4 from 12:00-2:00pm at the Valdez Museum on Egan and the Valdez Museum on Hazelet. In addition, there will be a Lemonade Stand from 12:00-2:00pm at the Museum on Egan for visitors to enjoy refreshing beverages courtesy of the Museum.

The Gold Rush Parade begins at 3pm on Sunday, August 5 and travels down Egan Drive right past the Valdez Museum, a great viewing spot! Immediately afterwards townsfolk will begin gathering in front of the Museum for the Town Photo.

The Valdez Museum and Historical Archive is pleased to be part of the excitement and activities during the 2018 Gold Rush Days celebration in Valdez!
