Local artist Shana Anderson shares her love of the wild scenery and animals of Prince William Sound, all rendered in felted wool constructions of her own making. Anderson is a longtime resident of Valdez, well-known and well-liked in the community. Known by many as a practicing local artist and former instructor at Prince William Sound Community College, Anderson’s wool constructions have garnered acclaim from residents who have viewed her work in museum group exhibitions and retail outlets locally. Since her retirement as the town’s sole Animal Control Officer in 2012, she has focused on her artwork in a wide variety of mediums, including printmaking, oil painting, and fiber art. “Wild and Wooly” represents Anderson’s recent direction of producing both 2-dimensional and sculptural works using wool, frequently embellished with additional materials such as silk. Anderson’s work has previously appeared in the Valdez Museum’s semi-annual Celebrating Valdez Artists community group exhibition, and in the Fall 2013 textiles invitational, “Pushing the Boundaries.” Shana’s fascination with material and textures will be sure to delight art enthusiasts of all types, particularly by Valdez’s talented pool of textile artists.
Anderson’s works will be available for sale both through the gallery and works displayed in the museum’s gift shop. A members-only reception will be held on September 19.
