This July’s Tuesday Nite History Talk will focus on Lillian’s life here in Valdez and the Tiekel River area. The narrative of her life is illustrated by period photos of her roadhouse at Tiekel River, as well as photos taken around Valdez and along the grueling glacier trail. Viewers are sure to enjoy the pictures of Lillian’s photogenic pets, as well.
Lillian Moore was one of the first pioneer women to arrive in Valdez. She hailed from New England, and had sailed around the Horn of South America, arriving in Valdez in the summer of 1898. An expert with horses, twenty-year-old Lillian joined army Captain Abercrombie’s August 1898 exploration of the Valdez Glacier. The glacier proved a challenging course for both man and beast. Horses would slip into crevasses, and while Abercrombie’s soldiers extracted them with ropes, block, and tackle, Lillian would lead four or five horses over the exacting trail.
Lillian wrote about her experiences during this expedition in a letter to her sister Lou. She depicted the arduous exploits accomplished and the rugged privations the team endured as they explored the glacier route from Valdez to Klutina Lake.
