The Valdez Museum welcomes the artwork of Homer-based artist Debra Lowney in her solo exhibition, Going with the Flow.  The exhibition is the fifth temporary art exhibit to be offered in 2016, added to the exhibit roster from the usual four.

Lowney creates luminously-painted carved wood wall-hung constructions in both abstract and representational forms. Going with the Flow is a literal reference to water and the impact that water has on our environment, most specifically Valdez and the surrounding areas.

In her artist’s statement Lowney writes: “Through a process of destruction and reconstruction, water carves, deposits, erodes, freezes, flows, saturates, and nourishes this land. Water offers bounty for our survival, yet it is a force to be reckoned with. It offers esthetic beauty in our natural playgrounds for rejuvenation, yet water can also cause heartbreak.

“Each and every piece on display in this exhibit demonstrates a playful yet focused study of our relationship with water. When walking a sandy beach at low tide one enjoys the patterns etched in the sand by water and other natural forces. The earth’s surface has been shaped and textured by the forces of water, from our mountain tops to our beaches. A stream carves away a mountain side only to reshape a valley, or build up an alluvial fan at its base. I use this process, tearing something apart and then reconstructing it, throughout this show.”

Lowney is an accomplished artist. She grew up in Wisconsin appreciating the country, wildlife, a wide variety of art. She moved to Homer in 1980, where her pursuit of the outdoors rekindled her enjoyment of working with her hands eventually leading her back to the art world. Since 2000, she has participated in eight solo shows, four duo shows, and over ten collaborative exhibitions. Her accomplishments include several People’s Choice Awards, and having two of her pieces in the Pratt Museum’s permanent art collection.

Going with the Flow runs November 10, 2016 through February 11, 2017. An opening reception, free for museum members, will be held at the museum on Thursday, November 10, 6 PM – 8 PM. Refreshments will be served.
