COVID-19 MESSAGE FROM THE VALDEZ MUSEUM

COVID-19 MESSAGE FROM THE VALDEZ MUSEUM

Valdez, Alaska, March 18, 2020 – As we transition from winter to spring, with glorious views of the snow covered peaks surrounding us, we also see the effects of a global pandemic unfolding both within and beyond our small community. Its impact is felt everywhere, including with present and future operations of the Valdez Museum & Historical Archive. In the words of Patricia Relay, VMHA Executive Director:

“All the uncertainty is troubling, but my staff and I continue planning programs and projects. On a state and national level, the Alaska Travel Industry Association and the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) are providing guidance. On a local level, we are networking with Valdez Unified Community Response Group: COVID-19. We are not panicking, and with that in mind, we are moving forward.”

Due to public health concerns the Valdez Museum remains closed to the public through March 31, 2020, but museum staff are seeking ways to provide “virtual” exhibits and educational programs. Spring Into Art 2020, our annual Student Art Show is now being installed and will be shared with the public via an online format. This is just one example of how the Valdez Museum strives to continue fulfilling its mission, along with other museums around the country. Laura Lott, AAM President, expresses it this way:

“Even though many museums, large and small have closed their doors to help stem the community spread of coronavirus, it’s inspiring to witness the many ways museums are still serving their communities.”

Although this current situation is scary and unsettling, the Valdez Museum remains your trusted source of information for sustaining a healthy community and maintaining calm.
