"Gardner dropped the oar and jumped for the shore. Got hold of an overhanging tree and crawled up on dry land. It seems that Archer must have seen Gardner jump, and he tried to do the same. Gardner saw him hanging to a tree and also called to him for help. After Gardner came ashore, he pushed a pole out to him, but it seems archer was too weak to catch hold. He was seen to let go the tree and go down into his cold and watery grave. Hallett also saw him from the opposite shore, but of course it was an utter impossibility for him to render any assistance." MB-D, 9/14/98; Drowns, Koehler in Glenn & Abercrombie, p. 601; Powell gives watch to to keep safe; part of Schrader's group, dies in the Archer River, Powell, Trailing, p. 54.
