The Valdez Museum, located just two blocks from most hotels in Valdez, is a long-standing favorite of Valdez visitors. Exhibits about our community's past tell the stories of the gold rush, founding of Valdez, the Richardson Highway, the oil pipeline, and the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill. On display here are two beautifully restored turn-of-the-century fire engines, a lighthouse lens from Prince William Sound, and re-creations of a prospector's cabin and an early Valdez parlor. The Museum is self-guided. Our temporary exhibit this summer is the annual Quilt & Fibre Expressions exhibit, including over 30 quilts by local crafters.
The Remembering Old Valdez Exhibit is located four blocks from the Museum. Its centerpiece is a 1:20 scale model of the Old Town Valdez as it appeared just before the massive 1964 Earthquake. The model is very precise and contains details down to flower boxes and bicycles. Accompanying the model are exhibits about the Earthquake, current seismic activity in our area, and every-day implements from the 50's and 60's. Knowledgable staff enhance visitors' understanding of this fascinating time period.
Hours: Both locations are open daily Memorial Day - Labor Day 9am-5pm. We offer special evening hours with at least four weeks notice. Click here for our hours.
Group Rate: $4.95 per person. This rate applies for groups of 10 or more. Members of the group must visit the museum together. The rate covers admission for both the Museum and the Remembering Old Valdez Exhibit. Drivers and guides are free. Admission may be pre-paid, paid at the time of visit, or invoiced with prior approval.
