Our Collections
Archive (35,000 Photographs, Manuscripts, Documents)

Through the community's existence, residents have amassed this extensive collection of material that reflects Valdez's 106 years of history. Journals, letters, photographs, slides, negatives, event programs, sales receipts, financial records, scrapbooks, promotional materials, and newsletters represent the community's social and economic development from 1898 to present.

Significant collections include a three-album set of original images taken by the Miles brothers, a pair of surveyors charting a route for a potential Valdez railroad in 1899, the original diary of prospector George Hazelet; a collection of material documenting the history of Harborview Mental Health Facility; Valdez cemetery records; Valdez schools year books; and the Thomas Malcolm collection. Malcolm was a construction manager for the Alyeska Pipeline Company and saved his daily activity notes, correspondence, and other materials related to the terminal construction.
